Best upcoming phones :) 2023's best smartphone releases so far

Apple iPhone 15

A noteworthy mention on the list of upcoming smartphones belongs to any Apple launch, and this year, the spotlight is on the iPhone 15 series. Scheduled for release in September 2023, Apple's consistent track record with launches and release dates ensures a predictable timeline. The iPhone 15 models, including the base version, are expected to feature the fancy Dynamic Island notch. Additionally, there are hopes for the inclusion of 8K video recording capabilities, along with a periscope zoom camera to rival the impressive 10x optical zoom found in the formidable Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Interestingly, recent rumors suggest the possibility of an iPhone 15 Ultra taking the place of the expected iPhone 15 Pro Max, which would introduce the much-anticipated periscope lens. As we await further updates, it's worth noting that the current reigning champion in the Apple world remains the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Google Pixel Fold

The highly anticipated Pixel Fold made its grand entrance at Google I/O 2023, and soon it will be available for purchase starting mid-June at a price of $1799/£1749. Google made the official announcement on May 4th, accompanied by a playful message, 'May The Fold Be With You,' a concise video, and a 'sign up' page. However, it was during the annual developer event that all the exciting details were revealed.

The Pixel Fold incorporates the distinctive design elements seen in other Google Pixel models, most notably the reverse camera bar. But the real star of the show is the foldable display, reminiscent of Samsung's foldable models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. When unfolded, it boasts an impressive 7.6-inch, 120Hz internal display, which conveniently shrinks down to 5.8 inches when closed. Powering this cutting-edge device is the Google-designed Tensor G2 chip, paired with a substantial 12GB of RAM. Storage options come in either 256GB or 512GB variants. As for battery life, the Pixel Fold houses a 4820mAh (typical) battery, capable of charging at 30W and providing a full day's worth of usage.

When it comes to photography, the Pixel Fold delivers impressive capabilities. It features a 48MP primary camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), accompanied by a 10.8MP ultrawide lens and a 10.8MP telephoto lens, which offers an impressive 5x optical zoom.

The Pixel Fold marks Google's foray into the exciting world of folding handsets, combining innovative design and powerful performance. With its eye-catching features and top-notch specifications, the Pixel Fold is set to make waves in the smartphone market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

Considering the immense success of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it would be a missed opportunity for Samsung to halt their innovation at that point. Fortunately, it seems highly likely that they have more in store for us, including the anticipated release of the Z Fold 5. This upcoming folding phone ranks high on our list of the best upcoming foldable phones (be sure to check out our comprehensive roundup).

While specific details are scarce at the moment, there are a few features we would love to see in the Z Fold 5. First and foremost, an even sleeker and more streamlined design would be a welcome improvement. Additionally, faster charging capabilities would greatly enhance the overall user experience. And to fully take advantage of the expansive unfolded display, the inclusion of a built-in S-Pen for drawing and doodling would be a fantastic addition.

If you can't wait until July or August for the arrival of a brand-new Samsung foldable, rest assured that the current version still offers an impressive and satisfying experience. However, it's always exciting to anticipate the next iteration of Samsung's foldable lineup, as they continue to push the boundaries of innovation in the smartphone industry.

OnePlus 11

This cutting-edge smartphone, known as a 'flagship killer,' was part of the initial wave of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices, marking its technological prowess. Notably, it reintroduced the much-loved alert slider feature that had been absent in the previous-generation OnePlus 10T. Moreover, it boasts a remarkable trio of rear cameras bearing the prestigious Hasselblad branding, a high-resolution AMOLED display, and rapid wired charging capabilities. What's truly impressive is that OnePlus has succeeded in maintaining an affordable price point, preserving its reputation as a favored choice among value-conscious consumers.

Xiaomi 13/ Xiaomi 13 pro

The Xiaomi 13 and its larger counterpart made their initial appearance in Xiaomi's home market and later made their European debut at the MWC exhibition in February. The standard model features a flat AMOLED display housed within an aluminum frame, catering to a wider audience. On the other hand, the higher-end Xiaomi 13 Pro exhibits curved glass and a more rounded design aesthetic. Both smartphones are equipped with powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors, generous RAM, and ample storage capacity. However, it is the Xiaomi 13 Pro that will capture the attention of photography enthusiasts. With a 50MP zoom lens, 50MP ultrawide lens, and a remarkable 50MP primary camera boasting a 1-inch sensor, it delivers stunning bokeh effects and exceptional low-light performance. Notably, both models support 120W wired charging as well as wireless charging for added convenience.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra takes the photographer's experience to the next level. With four 50MP rear cameras, including the essential 1-inch sensor for the primary lens, it offers exceptional image quality. What sets it apart is the ability to manually adjust the aperture, allowing for creative control with options ranging from f/1.9 to f/4.0. The smartphone also features a 12mm ultra-wide lens, a 70mm telephoto lens, and an impressive 120mm zoom lens, covering a wide range of photography needs. Along with its appealing design, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra boasts a fantastic screen and commendable battery life. The only downside is its limited availability outside of China, which is something we hope will change in the future.

Vivo X90 Pro

Vivo may not be widely recognized in the UK, but its collaboration with Zeiss has consistently delivered impressive advancements in smartphone photography. The introduction of the X90 Pro to the UK market marks a significant milestone, as it features a remarkable 1-inch main camera sensor, surpassing the capabilities of most other smartphones. Driving its performance is a MediaTek Dimensity chip, which competes comfortably with the top offerings from Qualcomm. Despite its relatively lesser-known reputation in the UK, the Vivo X90 Pro showcases the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of smartphone photography and delivering a competitive user experience.

Oppo Find N2 Flip

Oppo has experimented with book-style foldables in the past, but the Find N2 Flip marks its first foray into the clamshell design. However, you wouldn't guess it was their first attempt, as the device boasts impeccable design and build quality, surpassing Samsung by offering a completely closed fold with no visible gap between the halves. Not only does it excel in battery life and performance, but it also captures impressive photos. Additionally, its outer screen is among the largest you'll find on any flip phone. The icing on the cake is that it significantly undercuts the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in terms of price, solidifying its position as our top choice for a clamshell phone at the moment.

Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate

True to its name, Asus has truly created the epitome of a gaming phone with its latest offering. Not only does it feature the latest Snapdragon processor, but it also offers an optional active cooling add-on that utilizes TEC chilling technology. This ensures impeccable performance, and the phone doesn't disappoint in other areas either. With a spacious 6.78-inch OLED display, a secondary screen on the back for notifications and eye-catching effects, and a massive 6000mAh battery, it delivers an impressive experience. However, while the trio of rear cameras is decent, they don't quite justify the high price tag associated with the phone. It's a device that specifically caters to avid gamers and might not be suitable for everyone else.

Motorola Razr 2023

Motorola has been working on a new Razr phone, and it appears that they have two models in development. One model is targeted towards budget-conscious consumers who desire a foldable phone but have financial constraints. The other model is a higher-end version that aims to attract customers who would typically opt for a Samsung Galaxy Flip.

The Razr 40, the more affordable option, is expected to feature a vegan leather exterior and will be available in three color choices. It will also have a smaller outer screen specifically designed for displaying notifications. To maintain affordability, this model might incorporate an older chipset. On the other hand, the pricier Razr 40 Ultra will sport an outer screen that covers a significant portion of the top half of the phone. It may also receive upgraded hardware components to compete with other prominent competitors in the market. Both models are anticipated to be unveiled sometime during the summer.
